Syn Free Hummus

SYN FREE HUMMUS - Misadventurous Mummy

When I first joined Slimming World way-back-when, one meal I really missed was pitta bread and dips. Myke and I would go to the supermarket and buy a couple of trays of dips – usually a ‘Tex-Mex’ selection of salsa, guacamole, sour cream and occasionally nacho cheese and a hummus selection; a couple of packs of pitta bread, and some carrot sticks. We’d toast the pitta bread, cut them into strips and veg out with a movie, or Doctor Who. Sadly, most dips tend to contain a lot of syns due to the fat or sugar contents.

I then started experimenting with making my own dips so I could enjoy my meal and save some syns. Some worked, some didn’t, but one that tasted even better than the “real” thing was my hummus. Most recipes (and store bought hummus) call for tahini – a sort of sesame seed oil, which naturally is high in syns. In this recipe, the tahini is replaced with fat-free fromage frais, eradicating the syns completely. While I’m sure this would horrify some hummus connoisseurs, honestly, anyone who’s tasted it has agreed that it tasted just as nice, if not better than, “full fat” hummus.

Again, as always, double check syn values!
